Choice Theory is an explanation of human behaviour and motivation developed by Dr William Glasser. Although his most recent formulations of this theory were almost twenty years ago, his explanations are highly attuned to the most modern developments in cognitive psychology and biological neuroscience.

Choice Theory is a psychology of internal control. That means that it rejects the idea that we are controlled by people and events outside ourselves. External occurrences do affect our choices and often limit our options, but we always have some measure of personal liberty.

Choice Theory explains why we do what we do in all the circumstances of our lives. Learning and understanding this explanation can help us manage ourselves and work and communicate with other people.

Choice Theory has many applications:

  • In counselling or coaching Reality Therapy provides simple yet powerful procedures to help people for taking charge of their lives.
  • In education, the theory contributes to an understanding of student behaviour and supports many strategies which promote classroom effectiveness.
  • In the areas of leadership and management, the theory guides people in those roles to ways of working effectively with their staff or employees to create a cohesive and productive workplace.
  • In the health or social work professions, the procedures for working with clients help them to take more effective control of their circumstances.
  • In resolving human conflict through negotiation and mediation strategies.

Rob Stones provides teaching and consultancy services that support people working in any of these areas.

All of the workshops listed on this website are grounded in the Choice Theory explanations of human behaviour.
